Fresh Starts And More Of The Same
This year, I will turn 50 years old. Half a century of experiences to draw from, and a future, a life that I don’t always feel that I am in control of. I can pick and choose what I want to share about what was good, and things that didn’t go so well over the past year, or I can begin anew.
I've never been one for New Year's resolutions, but for whatever reason (plenty of reasons), I quit drinking alcohol one year ago today. 2024 was good to me in so many ways as a result. I grew healthier physically and financially as I could focus on getting things done rather than working until it was time to buy a six-pack.
The clarity of mind that came from removing alcohol from my system brought with it a new challenge. When I felt the pains of anxiety or the throes of depression, I would pour myself a drink. Now, however, I found that I would have to talk it out. (I actually enjoy going to my therapist).
Taking care of mental health has become increasingly recognized as essential to leading a balanced and fulfilling life. With growing awareness about its importance, mental health is now seen not just as the absence of illness but as a state of overall well-being. People are just trying to cope with the stresses of life and work and try to be good people.
From mindfulness practices and therapy to social support systems and workplace initiatives, the conversation around mental health has shifted from stigma to empowerment. People realize that mental health isn't a luxury; it's a necessity. I'm one of those people.
This year, I will turn 50 years old. I have half a century of experiences to draw from and a future, a life that I don't always feel that I am in control of. I can pick and choose what I want to share about what was good and what didn't go so well over the past year, or I can begin anew. We can move forward, learning from the past.
Nothing is promised. 2025 will be a mix of fresh starts and more of the same, just like any other year.
Every day, we're given another chance to choose growth, embrace change, and take one more step toward the life we want to live. Here's to fresh starts, the lessons we carry, and the strength to keep moving forward—one day, one choice at a time.
